Abstract

Jute (Corchorus spp.), known as the “Golden Fibre,” is a major natural fibre crop of South Asia and is highly dependent on monsoon rainfall for crop establishment, vegetative growth, fibre production and post-harvest retting. El Niño, the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), can alter South Asian monsoon behavior and thereby increase the risk of rainfall deficits, prolonged dry spells, heat stress and irregular rainfall distribution in jute growing regions. These climatic anomalies may adversely affect seed germination, plant growth, biomass accumulation, nutrient uptake and fibre yield, while intense rainfall events may increase waterlogging and associated production losses. An additional vulnerability arises from inadequate retting water, which can delay fibre extraction and reduce fibre quality and market value. However, the ENSO monsoon relationship is not deterministic and varies among individual El Niño events because of interactions with the Indian Ocean Dipole and other climatic processes. Climate resilient jute production therefore requires an integrated approach involving drought-tolerant genotypes, timely sowing, soil moisture conservation, supplemental irrigation, efficient drainage, balanced nutrient management, climate informed advisories and water efficient microbial or accelerated retting technologies. This review highlights the potential pathways through which El Niño related climate variability can influence jute production and identifies research priorities for improving the resilience, productivity and fibre quality of jute under a changing climate.
