Abstract

Field pea (Pisum sativum var. arvense) is most nutritious annual winter season grain legume belongs to family Fabaceae, having protein content ranged from 22 to 25% and considered as major source of protein in vegetarian diet. In addition to their nutritional value, these crops have capability to improve fertility of soil by establishing the symbiotic association between the root nodules of plants and nitrogen fixing bacteria. To meet the demand of increasing population, a hike is required to gain the availability per capita of legumes. Therefore, high yielding variety of field pea with improved quality, tolerant/resistant to abiotic and biotic stress are needed. To achieve such targets of enhancing yield potential of crop varieties with improved resistance, new gene sources must be identified in untapped genetic pool of field pea using suitable molecular techniques to make selection more efficient and reliable, and incorporate into elite breeding material that will results in new plant type. In this context, this chapter summarises the current knowledge on conventional and molecular breeding strategies for improvement of field pea. It also briefs the information on taxonomy, origin, area and distribution, floral structure description, hybridization techniques and breeding objectives in the genus Pisum, and highlighted the field where more attention are required.
