Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oilseed crop grown worldwide due to its adaptability, productivity, nutritional value, and versatility of uses. Its seeds are a valuable source of edible oil containing beneficial unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and biologically active compounds. In addition to producing oil, sunflowers are used as food for livestock and poultry, and as a source of industrial products and medicines. The sunflower flour obtained after oil extraction provides protein and fiber and is of considerable value as animal feed. The crop also has the potential to produce biodiesel and other renewable energy sources. The genetic diversity of the Helianthus genus provides an opportunity for the development of improved varieties with increased resistance to environmental stresses and resistance to diseases and pests. In India, sunflower is highly valued for its adaptability to different agro-climatic conditions, short growing season and suitability to different cropping systems. The growing demand for edible oils, nutritious food resources and renewable energy sources has further increased the importance of this crop. This review discusses the botanical characteristics, distribution, nutritional importance, economic importance, main uses and future prospects of sunflower as a multifunctional crop contributing to sustainable agriculture, food and animal security, and bioenergy production.
